Partners offers services or settings that are medically appropriate, cost-effective substitutions for services covered by NC Medicaid. These are called “in lieu of” services. These services are extra supports to improve members’ health. Partners will work with our providers to connect members to these services, resources, social services, and other supports upon NCDHHS approval. Members are not required to use in lieu of services.

If Partners reduces or removes an in lieu of service during a contract year, members and providers will be notified by mail at least 30 days before the change. Partners will also maintain an up-to-date list of in lieu of services on our website and note any upcoming changes.

Substitution of In Lieu of Services

If the in lieu of service provided by Partners is not a medically appropriate, cost-effective substitute or an issue is identified, a similar service or setting may be assigned to the individual. Members have the right to refuse an in lieu of service and to receive the service included in the state’s plan or waiver.
